In a time without in-person contact, it is amazing to see how well this year’s run of Unfiltered has come together thanks to everyone who contributed. It is thanks to the members of our team who worked exceptionally on all their assigned roles and tasks in order to populate the magazine with content as well as our tutors Kim Blake and Julia Robson, that we were able to receive constructive feedback throughout the course in order to further build on our journalistic abilities. Also, a big thank you to James at Scheinfor designing the website and taking care of all the digital aspects!

This is Unfiltered*, an all-inclusive and in-depth publication that was built up over the span of a twelve-week Fashion Publishing and Media Relations course on the BA Fashion Marketing pathway at Regent’s University London.

The magazine was created as an outlet for students to share their findings and research across a variety of topics that piqued their interests, varying between fashion, pop culture, and other world events. From covering fashion shows and upcoming trends to broader issues being faced in an era of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were encouraged to provide nuanced and well-balanced takes from a fresh point of view. Despite not being able to carry out the work behind the magazine in person due to the ongoing pandemic that has confined us to learning from behind our computers, our team was able to come together in order to provide unique and, yes, unfiltered looks into their lives through this magazine, reporting on all the different topics that have caught their attention, no matter where in the world they happened to have been.

The Thousand Lives of a White Shirt by Valentino

White shirt fever has been ingrained in our lives for as long as we can remember. The versatility of this piece of clothing is what makes it a star wardrobe staple.

It’s a connector between the past and the future, in which the past is emphasised and the future is linked

Everybody needs it. Every culture and subculture has used the white shirt. That is its genius,” fashion stylist, Karla Welch told Vogue. There isn’t any doubt about it. The White shirt is a must-have no matter the season – or decade. Combined with denim shorts, worn over a t-shirt or as an oversize Spring/Summer 2021 look, there is no boundary to this indispensable garment.

Its adaptability to all fashion tastes and needs is key. And there isn’t any uncertainty this will also be its season (again). During this time where practising social distancing and isolation is the new Pilates, this practical star basic gives us just a chunk of normality and comfort.

Combining it with simple minimalistic jewellery in order to give us extra motivation for the day if needed, or even with yoga pants or jeans (depending on which side of the bed you got up on) this wardrobe staple will always give you an iconic timeless look.

Valentino’s latest collection demonstrated the thousand lives of a white shirt and the turnaround of some basic wardrobe essentials. Pierpaolo Piccioli´s pragmatic collection leaves on the bench vibrant spring summer colours in order to substitute it for three timeless monochromatic colours; White, Gold & Black.

The luxurious Italian brand has given us some ideas for a turnaround of our wardrobe essentials parallel to Haute Couture techniques, where the white shirt has taken prominence. Valentino wagers on this essential basic with a turnaround, including Saturday Night Fever style huge collars which we already saw at Loewe and Victoria Beckham´s 2020 collections.

Pierpaolo Piccioli throughout his Autumn 2022 collection embodies the different styles and perceptions of “how to” wear this iconic item. This turnaround of the white shirt gives us an idea of Valentino´s perception of going back to the office. Sober? Yes but never boring.

There is no hesitation when I state the white shirt is THE item to invest at any decade, any season and any time. It is a few of the only secure investments we can say without doubt you will be pleased with. Its versatility, adaptability and flexibility are some of the key aspects that make a white shirt desirable and a must-have.

The timeless perception of this star wardrobe staple emphasizes the concept of enduring fashion trends. It’s a connector between the past and the future, in which the past is emphasised and the future is linked.

He’s not the first (and sure won’t be the last) to use it but Pierpaolo Piccioli’s confident catwalk assurance that there is no limit to ways you can wear the classic white shirt retains not only his authority but position on fashion’s current superleague.
